What Spain Taught Me About Slowing Down
I started to revert back to an old version of myself on this trip that's like, you gotta make the most of everything. Like, don't let this be a waste of time, money, energy. And I think that's a very scarce way to live. What if the thing standing between you and the next six figures isn't another business strategy, but more people knowing who you actually are? That is exactly why I wrote the six figure personal brand.
It's part memoir, part strategy, and the behind-the-scenes story of how I stopped waiting for someone else to discover me and started intentionally building a personal brand that opened doors I once thought were completely out of reach. Inside, I share how I've used PR, speaking, partnerships, thought leadership, and my own story to build a six-figure business with plenty of the mistakes, investments, and slightly unhinged decisions that happened along the way. Because you don't need millions of followers to build a powerful personal brand.
You just need to become known for something that actually matters. The Six Figure Personal Brand is a number one Amazon bestseller and it's now available for you to buy on Amazon. What I thought was gonna be a simple, this was my trip to Spain, and here's everything that I learned and experienced and loved. This is more of like a here's how I survived Spain, why I'm so excited to go home, and what I learned instead. And I think like that's the great irony of life, right? We make plans, God laughs.
I'm a firm believer that everything is supposed to teach us something. So despite the fact that this was a dream trip that for me became like not very dreamy, definitely nightmarish at times. I'm excited to just kind of like dive into what my experience was, but also like what I'm taking away from it.
Because I think it would be really easy to have the experience that I had here and feel like I wasted time or money or energy on a trip that didn't really fill me up in the way that I thought it was going to, but such is the great experience of life. I think we are often surprised by what happens. And that really is what the last couple of weeks have been for me. So this is not
The Spain recap I thought I would be giving today, but it is the one that is truthful and authentic. And you know, I always think we need to have more of that. So let's take it back to a couple weeks ago when I was feeling young, energized, healthy, clear-minded. I got to board my very, very first
first class lay flat seat on an airplane. Everything was right in the world. Honestly. everything except for one sneaky little detail that my ultra human ring flagged literally on the morning that I left for Spain. I had to head to the airport at 445. I actually had like a car pick me up.
From our house to take me to the airport. Don't really feel comfortable using Ubers at that hour. And honestly, the price difference really wasn't that significant. if anything, honestly. So I'd arranged that. And I felt a little groggy, but I was like, of course, like I've just gotten up so early. You know, I had gotten back from Atlanta only a couple days before with my trip with Gabriel and his family.
And so feeling like a little bit tired and off really wasn't anything that raised a red flag for me. However, my ultra human ring did send me a little message and said, Hey, your temperature is a little bit elevated. This could be the early sign of a fever. Be careful of your immune load, like, you know, this is like early signs of illness, blah, blah, blah.
And I was like, huh, I've never received that message from my ultra human ring. But I was like, okay, you know, I'm sure I'm not in like tip-top health at this point, but how bad can it really be? So, anyways, time goes on. We take this amazing, amazing flight to Barcelona. Well, technically from Vancouver to Montreal, Montreal to Barcelona.
And I'm really trying to like catch up on sleep on that flight that I had in the lay flat. I'm catching up on work. I'm excited for the trip ahead. I'm just feeling like really, really prepared for a vacation. Honestly, a couple a couple months ago, I kept saying how I wanted to take four weeks off in the summer. And while
I kind of did that in my own way. That's still like a massive accomplishment. And I was just really looking forward to like having some time away from my desk, spending some time in another warm place with palm trees, which is really where I feel most like myself. So get to Barcelona Airport, and we actually had to take one more flight. So our third flight, which would take us to Visa. So
After spending a couple hours in like the least busy lounge I've ever seen in my life, you guys, you know how if you go to any North American airport lounge at this day and age, like it's going to be packed, not even that relaxing, people everywhere, usually at capacity. This one had nobody in it. And it was gorgeous. So we hung out there for a couple hours and then finally got to board our flight to Ibiza.
And the first couple days in Abiza were really, really amazing. Old Town Abiza has like the most like perfect resortware shopping. Like the boutiques in Old Town Abiza, honestly my favorite. I'm still dreaming about this butter yellow knit cardigan that I saw in one of the boutiques, and it was just way too big for me to bring home. Like my carry-on is already at max capacity.
I have one jacket that I wore on the plane, one sweater that I will have to tell you more about in a little bit. And so I just couldn't justify buying this very, very heavy article of clothes. But just know, next time I'm gonna come prepared to shop. It's just a little bit out of the ordinary for me. Usually I like plan all my outfits in advance and like, you know, I'll do all my shopping in advance. So I have all the cute.
clothes to wear on my trip. I did a little bit of this of that this time around, but I think I've just had like, I mean, I've been saying this for a while, but I have outfit fatigue. I have to choose so many outfits for events, speaking engagements, photo shoots. Like at this point in time, I'm like, I hate to pick out an outfit. Buying new clothes doesn't really like light me up the way that it used to, only because I'm usually buying them for a purpose.
So, anyways, incredible shopping in Old Town Abiza. We went to a club, like a day club called Obeach. So Obeach is like one of the more famous day clubs on Abiza, from what I've been told. We went to what is called Spray Day, which is supposed to be one of their like iconic events. I think they do it like either once a month or like once a
week, but basically what happens is every person gets their own bottle of Kava, which is basically champagne, Spanish champagne. And at a certain time you get to go to the bar to pick up your bottle. And then it's like at seven o'clock, they basically ring a bell and everyone opens up their bottle and like sprays each other with champagne. It's exactly what you imagine sticky, a lot of
Bodies in bikinis now covered in champagne. But honestly, it was just like kind of good old-fashioned day club fun, which I love a day club. I love to sit by a pool in a bathing suit, have some drinks, a little bit of dancing, like that's my vibe. Not so much a nightclub girl, but anyways. So we did O Beach. The day after that, we went to Formentera, which is like an island off of Abiza.
So you take like a half an hour ferry to get there, and there's beautiful white sand beaches, turquoise waters. So we spent the day there until we had to come back to get ready to go to Ushuaia. Ushuaia is one of the most famous, it's not a nightclub, but I guess open air venues in Ibiza. And we got to see David Geta at Ushuaia, which was great. So basically, it's like an open air club. the
Kind of event runs from like 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. So, like it's not a true Abiza nightclub. Abisa nightclubs typically don't get going until like midnight, and then they go to like six in the morning. That I will just get ahead of myself and say we did not participate in any of that, which I'm honestly probably relieved because who knows what kind of condition I would be in if that was the case. So had an amazing time at David Getta. Like honestly.
It was what you would think it would be, right? Like so many people. He's playing all the hits. People are dancing. There's like really great visuals and acrobatics and things like that. So honestly, can't complain. It was great. And then after that, we were going to Mallorca the next day. And I
So, like, let me just round up my thoughts on Abiza first, because I think I would love to go back one day and have a little bit of a different experience. So, since I started planning this trip back in January, my algorithm has been like all Abiza all the time. And I think it's really easy to get sucked into like Abiza is like the party capital, and what you do there is club and C DJs. And while that's like obviously true, I mean like
All of the billboards, all of the signage, it really feels like that is the culture Abiza revolves around. There is a lot of really beautiful nature and scenery and parts of the island that I didn't feel like I experienced just because that wasn't really the vibe of this trip. And that's okay. So, anyways, after that, we went to Mallorca and I immediately was in love with this place. So I just have to tell you about the amazing.
hotel experience that we had. So we and like let me just preface this by saying like I am known for my expertise in choosing a great hotel. And on this particular trip, we did no chain hotels. We just did like boutique hotels. So obviously you're always taking like a little bit of a gamble. But I chose this one just based on its reviews and where it was located. It's called the Navy
Nivea Born Boutique Hotel in Mallorca. It's right in the middle of Palma. And if you are going on a trip there, I highly, highly recommend you stay there. because when we walked in, so the flight from Abiza to Mallorca is super short, less than an hour. So then we're on Mallorca, get a cab to the hotel. And as soon as we walk in with our luggage, say we're checking in, they're like, okay, we are going to leave your luggage here.
And we'll take it to your room for you. But we would love to give you a glass of champagne on the rooftop terrace. So our colleague will take you up there and you can finish checking up there. I'm like, okay, sounds amazing. So we like left our big bags down there and then took the elevator all the way up with this new colleague that basically appeared out of nowhere. She poured us, actually, she didn't pour us champagne. What happened was when we got up to that.
Top floor, the elevator doors opened. She took us to like these beautiful seats on this terrace where you could like look at like the cathedral in one direction, like gorgeous scenery and homes in the other direction. And then another colleague appeared out of nowhere with two glasses of Kava champagne. And that's where we kind of finished our checking in. You have to provide some like personal information whenever you're staying at hotels here. So
We did that. And as we're finishing that, the woman helping us says, By the way, we've upgraded you to a princess suite. And it comes with a complimentary bottle of wine. Do you want red, rose, white? We're like, obviously, we want rose. But when I tell you, this was like the most incredible check-in experience I'd ever had. Like
First of all, to say to the guests who have just gotten here, like, you know, like let's not do this in the lobby. Let's take you up to like the the seventh floor, get you all checked in, get you a glass of bubbly, like take what is usually a very daunting and kind of boring part of a trip and make it fun. my God, ten out of ten. And I'm not sure if they like just did this for us. Okay, because the thing is I have like certain status with
This is so random, but Expedia. Okay. And so there are certain hotels, a lot of boutique hotels. If I book them on Expedia, if they're like a VIP property, I usually get some perks. This is a pretty substantial perk. I mean, I've never really experienced anything like that before, but I did see people checking in in the lobby like after the fact. So not really sure what happened. But anyways, it was great for us.
So after that we just kind of like enjoyed our room for a little bit. We went shopping. I would say this was my favorite day of the trip. I immediately fell in love with Majorca. I was happy, energized. I was excited to like not be on an island that was like so consumed by partying anymore. Like I was just really, really excited.
Which is when things start to unravel, obviously. This episode is sponsored by Adobe Acrobat. And this actually ties in perfectly with what we're talking about today. Because if you're building a personal brand, at some point you need a system for capturing your story. I'm talking about things like planning your next vlog before you ever hit record, organizing your content ideas so they don't live across 10 different notes apps and screenshots, keeping your travel plans, shot lists, and creative ideas together in one place.
Or collaborating with your team so everyone understands the story you're trying to tell before editing even begins. Because creating great content isn't about capturing everything. It's about capturing the right things. This is something I've been working on a lot lately as I've started vlogging, and Adobe Acrobat has become a huge part of that workflow. Before every trip or project, I've started building an Adobe Acrobat PDF space where I organize everything from my itinerary and reservations to content ideas, storylines, shot lists, and creative notes.
Instead of trying to remember every clip I want to capture while I'm in the moment, I've already done the thinking beforehand. What I love most is that everything lives in one place. I can easily share it with my team, add notes as new ideas come up, and keep the entire project organized from planning through to the final edit. For me, that's been a game changer because it allows me to actually be present during the experience instead of feeling like I need to constantly think about content. So if you're someone who's creating content for your business,
Or maybe you've been wanting to start documenting your journey a little bit more intentionally. This is definitely a workflow worth exploring. You can visit the link in the show notes to do that with Acrobat. So after that day, we like had shopping and dinner, and then the next day we got to go on an amazing boat cruise, just like on a catamaran. There was like a ton of us. And the
The man who like ran the excursion, like created a beautiful lunch. He was so sweet. He took us to all these different spots where we could swim off the boat and snorkel and all of that. But I started to feel a little off that day. And by the end, you know, we get off this boat, and I kind of think to myself, you know, I didn't put on sunscreen. I know, don't come for me. I'm trying my best here, but I do love a no sunscreen moment.
So I thought maybe I had like a little bit of heat stroke. It was also supposed to be getting my periods. I was like, you know what? I'm just feeling like really, really off. And so after the boat cruise, my friend and I sat on a patio at a restaurant for a couple hours, had a couple drinks. Me, I think I only had maybe like one alcoholic beverage because I was like, something's off. And then things really started to go.
Downhill. So once that day was over, I started to wake up feeling considerably, considerably worse every single day. And I started to develop this cough. It is not like the cough that I have now. It was like a different version of the cough. But that was kind of like the first outward signal that, like, this isn't just heat stroke, right? This is me,
you know, really, really under the weather. You know, I don't really get sick. It's been like five years since I've had like any sort of flu. Sure, there are my there are months when like I get a migraine kind of around my cycle, which is, you know, arguably worse. Like knock on what I did, not get a migraine on this trip. That's actually, you know, that would have made things worse for sure. But for the rest of my trip in Barcelona, I'm like a little
or in Mallorca, I'm a little bit sad because I didn't really get to enjoy it the way that I wanted to. Because by the time we left for Barcelona, so like two days after that, I was like the most sick I'd ever been. My girlfriend jokes that when we were in the airport going from Palma to Barcelona, I was basically like nonverbal. Like I could not speak, mostly because I like my throat felt really, really swollen. So like I couldn't actually really talk.
But at the same time, I also like just didn't have the energy. And so for the first two days in Barcelona, I was in bed. I was in bed. I, you know, the one night I basically like woke up absolutely drenched in sweat, like my body just slick with sweat. You know, I had to have the hotel like literally change all of the sheets the next day because I was like, I just destroyed this bed. So much sweating.
And it was just like really, really rough. So evidently I had some sort of flu. And I wish I could tell you that, like, you know, once I started to feel a little bit better, I like got back on the horse and explored Barcelona and really tried to make up for the the parts of my trip that, you know, were kind of lacking. But it's just not true. And here's the thing. I think there's a part of me that started to put a lot of pressure on myself, right? Where I was like, well, this is like
Place to capture really stunning content that can be really, really good for your brand and business. And I was telling myself these things, and I'm like, but I just don't feel like interested in doing that. And I had to remind myself that I'm also not a travel influencer. So as much as travel is actually a part of my brand, obviously, because I do so much of it for work, the parts of like going on vacation.
And actually having to show so much of like my private personal life is actually not on brand for how I want to build a personal brand. You know, I've always told my clients, like, you don't have to share anything you don't feel comfortable with. You don't have to share parts of your personal life that you don't want to. And here I was putting the exact pressure that I try to take off my clients on myself.
When the reality is, as soon as I started to feel like a little bit better in Barcelona, I actually just wanted to have a really, really chill remainder of the trip. I mean, I go home tomorrow at the time of this recording, and you can hear my voice. I'm evidently still not very well, right? You can hear it on my voice. I'm a little bit congested. I still have this cough. My energy levels are like pretty, like they deplete really, really fast. So
Earlier today, I like went out, went for a walk, got breakfast, and then I was like, and that's all I can do for now. Like now I'm exhausted. And, you know, I'm gonna go sit on the rooftop pool for the next couple hours. And then I've got to do a little bit of work later tonight. just a couple calls that I wanted to get done, you know, before I head home and then take a couple days off to recover from jet lag. And I think that's okay.
Like I started to revert back to an old version of myself on this trip that's like, you gotta make the most of everything. Like, don't let this be a waste of time, money, energy. And I think that's a very scarce way to live. I think if there's one thing on this trip that I really, really noticed about myself or learned about myself, is that I missed Gabriel a lot. I like am getting emotional talking about it.
Cried like basically every day that I've been here. So that's not a shock. And I think one of the things I realized was: you know, I travel so much for work. If I'm gonna travel for pleasure, I want it to be with him. Otherwise, I'd just probably rather be at home with him than with our dogs. And the breaking point actually came a couple days into Barcelona. He texted me to let me know that.
He was on hold for an acting gig that shoots in Chile, which is not close at all to Vancouver. And originally when he was put on on hold, the starting date was he would leave on the day that I essentially fly back from Spain. So we wouldn't have even seen each other. And then he was gonna be gone for like a week, week and a half.
Thankfully, those dates have changed because he did actually book the gig, which we're so happy for him. obviously, like to watch him have success in his acting career is just really special to me. But it feels better knowing that he gets to pick me up from the airport tomorrow. I get to spend some time with him before now he goes on his trip. Cause that's a thing. We both have careers that.
Are really busy, take us a lot of places. But I really now for the foreseeable future, since I will have to continue to travel for work, which you know hits different too. I when I'm traveling for work, there's intention, there's purpose. Traveling for pleasure, really, really different vibe. And I think
Since you know, I was traveling with my best friend, which is great. But now she's been at a conference for the last couple of days. So it's really just been me. And I honestly think everything works out the way that it's supposed to, because it's actually been nice to be able to just have days by myself to recover by myself and not feel like I'm holding anyone back and I can just kind of do what I want to. But I think my intention, you know, Gabriel and I have had to.
I've had like r some really beautiful conversations while I've been here. And it's like, yeah, we want to l be a little bit more intentional about the time that we do spend with each other because it isn't a lot. And that really is like what we're looking forward to doing. And I think that's really beautiful. So yeah, it this really was not like the Spain trip that I had been dreaming of for the last six months.
It felt really different than I thought it was going to feel. And I'm not just talking about like me feeling sick. I'm talking about how I thought having certain experiences were gonna make me feel. I will say flying in a lay flat seat absolutely changed my life tomorrow when I go home. Also flying in a lay flat seat, although this time on a West Jet Dreamliner. And so I'm excited to like compare the experiences, honestly.
If that is what made this whole trip worth it, I don't even care because that is a beautiful way to fly. And I will continue to endorse that for anyone who gets that opportunity. But you know, I think we can never anticipate if we're going to get a flu, you know, if something out of the ordinary is gonna happen, if something doesn't go the way that we planned, like that's all just like life happening.
But I think the most important thing that we can do is always just like learn from it. And so I didn't really expect my vacation to like teach me anything. I thought it might teach me like, you know, this is how I like to travel. Or these are other luxurious experiences I want to have. But what it really taught me was how I want to start prioritizing my time. you know, as I
build a life that does travel so much. And yeah, so that's where I'm sitting. So unfortunately I don't have amazing recommendations for you. I am leaving this trip feeling so freaking excited to go home and feeling like, you know, I have some great content. I'll do like a photo dump tomorrow at the airport and we'll be on our way. And
I think that's good enough because at the end of the day, I didn't build a personal brand to become a travel influencer. My clients, and if you're listening to this, I know you didn't either. And so I think there's something really sacred about letting some of these experiences just be yours. And that's really what I'm taking out of this. So that's the insight scoop, you guys. There will be a vlog, Fame Ready IRL blog vlog hitting YouTube with a little bit more behind the scenes from the trip.
spoiler alert, it's like nothing glamorous. It's probably even more unsexy than what you're listening to right now. But that'll be live probably in the next month or so. So we'll let you know when when we get that vlog up and running. But yeah, I made sure to capture just like a little bit of the like really rough, sick day I was having.
Just because I was like, hey, that's reality TV folks, right? Like that's showbiz. So, anyways, I hope you enjoyed this podcast, even though I feel like it was a little bit anticlimactic. sorry you had to sit through my voice, the coughing, all of the things. But if you did happen to like this episode, please rate and review wherever you listen. It would absolutely mean the world. Please follow me at Katrina Owens PR.
If you do have questions about a visa, Mallorca, Barcelona, you want my hotel recommendations, please don't hesitate to send me a DM. Obviously, I did have some really great experiences while I was here. not the most comprehensive, that's for sure, but always happy to share if that's something that you're interested in. So I'll talk to y'all later. Okay, you guys, thank you so much again for tuning in and I'll see you next week. Okay. Toodles.
